According to a reports, recent efforts in Bridgend County, Wales have kept considerable household waste, including 278 tons of disposable diapers out of landfills, in just six months. The Bridgent County Borough Council, with its waste parner Kier, unveiled a new system earlier this year to increase the percentage of household waste that could be recycled. Already the percentage of household waste recycled in the county has increased from 57% to 74% between July and September.
Among the changes in the new system is the introduction of a "purple bag" for waste collections. Since the launch of this bag, which is used to collect diapers and other absorbent products, 7720 households have signed up for the service and this number is growing by 100 families per week. The diapers' cellulose fibers iare removed from the waste and then used to make fiber boards and acoustic paneling while the remaining plastic is sent for further processing.
