Domtar Corporation has purchased the assets of Butterfly Health Inc., the maker of Butterfly body liners, which offer discreet, secure protection for accidental bowel leakage (ABL). “This product provides a unique solution to a problem that exists for roughly one out of 10 people. It represents a complementary addition to our portfolio of brands and technologies,” says Mike Fagan, president of Domtar Personal Care.
The Butterfly liners will join other incontinence solutions for adults, children and infants already sold by Domtar. These brands include include Attends, Attends Discreet and Comfees
The Butterfly absorbent core is based on Domtar’s airlaid materials produced at its Jesup, Georgia, facility.
Butterfly body liners were introduced in 2014 and are currently sold in North America through several major retail channels. Domtar will leverage its global footprint to expand commercialization to additional healthcare markets with a focus on Europe.
The products, which were developed by former executives with P&G, received a Visionary Award for innovation at the INDA Vision Conference in 2014. At the time, executives called the product a category-creating innovation, designed to serve the needs of the 20% of women over 40 who suffer from bladder leakage. Soon after winning the Visionary Award, Butterfly executives announced the product had gained national distribution at retailers including CVS, Target and Walmart.
With roots in the paper industry, Domtar entered the adult incontinence market in 2011 when it acquired the Attends line of products. Since then it has expanded its hygiene businesses by purchasing Associated Hygienic Products, a U.S.-based diaper maker, and Laboratorias Indas, a Spanish maker of hygiene products.
