Techfab India is one of the sub-continent’s largest and most focused geosynthetic product manufacturers. Recently, Techfab India set up a manufacturing facility in Haridwar for the manufacture of high strength steel rope nets, self-drilling anchors and accessories used for geohazard mitigation.
Within the nonwovens sector, Techfab India’s product range in geotextiles includes: TechGeo range of polypropylene staple fiber needlepunched nonwoven geotextiles; TechPave polypropylene nonwoven paving fabrics; the TGC range of composite geotextiles—a polypropylene staple fiber needlepunched nonwoven geotextile reinforced (knit bonded) with high tenacity polyester filament yarns in both machine and cross-machine directions; TFI geotextile bags fabricated from TechGeo nonwoven geotextiles; and TechGeo nonwoven geotextiles used in the following geocomposites—as a filter envelope/jacket to the drainage core in TechDrain PVD and as a filter which is thermally bonded to an extruded geonet in TechDrain drainage composites.
Key applications for its products include flood protection, coastal and riverbank protection, transportation (roads and railways) for subgrade stabilization and drainage, landfills for geomembrane protection and drainage and ground improvement.
Techfab India’s nonwoven geotextiles can perform many functions like separation, filtration, drainage and protection. According to Anant Kanoi, managing director, India has a huge potential for applications of nonwoven geotextiles—transportation infrastructure, landfills, river banks and coastal protection and flood hazard mitigation.
“In most parts of India, availability of granular materials like sands and aggregates is a critical issue,” Kanoi says. “The use of nonwoven geotextiles helps to reduce the use of granular materials and facilitates innovative, efficient, economic and sustainable solutions in all these areas. However, concerns about availability of quality products and difficulties in procurement often discourage owners, consultants and contractors from using geosynthetics on a large scale. Techfab India’s entry into the nonwovens market was motivated by the need to ensure availability of quality assured products at a reasonable price and lead times.”
Considering several factors like the large size and huge population of India, the rapidly expanding road and railways network, its long coastline with severe erosion problems, vast areas prone to recurring floods, the need to safely dispose huge quantities of solid waste, etc., there is immense scope for geotextiles in India, Kanoi adds.
“There is significant growth in the market, however considering the huge potential, the growth should have been much faster,” he continues. “In a great number of applications, nonwoven geotextiles are introduced as an alternative to conventional methods employing granular materials – nonwoven geotextile filter as an alternative to graded granular filters, a geocomposite drain as an alternative to granular drains, geotextile bags as an alternative to riprap, etc. Restrictions on extraction of sand from river beds and quarrying have resulted in scarcity of granular materials. One important factor driving the growth of geotextiles is the growing shortage and increasing cost of granular materials like sand, aggregate and stone. The increasing awareness about the importance of using sustainable solutions also is contributing to the growth of geotextiles market.”
Although there are significant challenges in realizing the immense potential for the nonwoven geotextiles market in India, Kanoi says the outlook is positive and promising, “and for the serious and focused players it is a good time to be in nonwoven geotextiles.”
