An absorbent article to be applied on a body on a bodyside of the absorbent article, for absorption of body fluids, comprising at least one unitary absorbent structure comprising: a nonwoven absorbent core comprising a nonwoven fibrous substrate having: a top layer for liquid acquisition, a non-porous intermediate layer having a void volume ranging from about 10 cm3/m2 to about 600 cm3/m2, and at least one nonwoven fibrous substrate layer having a void volume between 600 cm3/m2 and 6000 cm3/m2 penetrated by super absorbent particles (SAP) in an amount up to 1000 g/m2, said super absorbent particles being dispersed in the nonwoven fibrous substrate layer according to a particle size distribution gradient along a depth direction or z-direction of said absorbent core and/or acquisition and dispersion layers, wherein smaller particles are located on the bodyside of the absorbent article and the larger particles are located on an opposite side of the absorbent article, a non-porous core-covering layer having a void volume between 10 and 600 cm3, to prevent the release of the SAP outside of the absorbent structure, and a liquid impervious backsheet.
