Headquartered in Mumbai, India, the Supreme Nonwoven Group was founded in 1986 by chairman, Mohan Kavrie. The myriad of possibilities due to materials, processes, finishes, conversion technologies and applications motivated Kavrie to enter the nonwoven industry. The first plant was located in Bhilad, India.
Over the years Supreme has expanded its manufacturing footprint, technologies, products, applications, industries it caters to and customer base. The range of nonwovens technologies are: carded (parallel, random, cross lapped, vertical lapped), airlaid (with bi-co and with resin), mechanical bonding (needlepunched, stitchbonded, hydroentangled), chemical bonding (binder, foam, resin) and thermal bonding (calendar, hot air), carpet structuring (plain, ribbed, parallel/random velour), calendaring, singeing, coating (foam, paste, extrusion), impregnation (binder, powder) and lamination. The range of conversion technologies include pleating, stitching and fabrication, thermo forming, thermo setting, thermo compression, PU headliner technology, vacuum forming, PU foaming, HF and ultrasonic welding, and robotic water jet trimming. The company has 14 manufacturing facilities in India and two in Thailand.
Supreme manufactures nonwovens for applications in filtration (solid, liquid and air), interlinings for apparel and home furnishings, performance fabrics for shoes, geotechnical and agricultural nonwovens, composite materials, automotive nonwovens and customized solutions. Furthermore, Supreme converts products for apparel, filtration and special purpose mattresses. “Our customized solutions product range relies on the vast material experience, wide range of nonwoven technologies and in-house design, development and testing/validation capabilities,” says Amit Kavrie, managing director, Supreme Nonwoven Group.
The company is also the leading tier one systems supplier of automotive interior soft trims and NVH components delivering to a majority of global automotive OEMs. The range of automotive components include carpets, trunk floor/side trims, package trays, headliners and engine/cabin/underbody insulations.
In the filtration market where Supreme offers its Nowofilt branded filters and filter products, technical service and performance are key. “Customers accustomed to high service and product performance levels appreciate the advantages of working with a technically oriented organization and this has worked to our advantage,” Kavrie explains.
Meanwhile, the Terca apparel interlining business has consistently grown over the past decade. With Technical Studios in India and Bangladesh, Terca has nominations from the leading global brands. During this year, the company has plans to expand across Southeast Asia with new Technical Studios supported by a dedicated sales and service organization.
Despite the impact of Covid-19 on auto sales, the company managed to sustain sales volumes largely due to product, customer, and geographical diversity. Over the next couple years the company expects to see strong growth in its automotive component business through the growth of value added products such as complete headliner modules, new products such as cabin trims for trucks, new technologies for trunk trims, new customers, a new segment for tractors and agricultural/industrial vehicles and market entry with expansion into Thailand.
During the pandemic, Supreme fast-tracked development for its NowoNext - NidraSure range of environmentally friendly fiber-based mattresses. “Several thousand NidraSure mattresses were distributed for free by Supreme to healthcare and emergency care medical centers across India,” says Kavrie. “Even under these special circumstances we ensured that the product meets Supreme’s Core Values of Innovation and Performance.” Supreme has plans to further expand the NowoNext range into new categories and products.
“The nonwovens industry is still fairly nascent in the geographies that we participate,” Kavrie says. “With rise in disposable incomes, increased concern for the environment, and tighter regulations, we are optimistic about our continued growth over the next few decades.”
