Since launching in West Yorkshire, U.K., in 1984, TSL has built an international business with product development capabilities in Europe, China and the Middle East. Its success to date has primarily been built within its core categories of first aid, feminine care, continence care, maternity and optical, all of which can be found on the shelves of major retailers under their own private label brands as well as under TSL’s own branded offering.
In 2005, TSL purchased its first high speed maxi towel line machine and acquired its second warehouse to facilitate increasing demand and growth. A second high-speed maxi towel line machine was purchased in 2008. In 2015, sanitary product manufacturer Sanpro Production Limited became a wholly owned subsidiary of TSL. Today, the company owns and operates over 80,000 square feet of manufacturing space.
“We benchmark to the leading brands who are continuously evolving to meet the needs of the consumer,” says TSL category development manager Laura Broadbent.
In addition to supplying some of the biggest names in the U.K. including Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Boots, TSL also works with the National Health Service (NHS) and care institutions.
“The U.K. is now in its second recession in 12 years,” Broadbent says. “Jobs are being cut as a result of the Covid-19 impact and we face a surge in unemployment. Consumers need the support of our retailers in helping them overcome such an uncertain and worrying time. This is where private label products really come into their own.”
The perception of private label has also changed dramatically in recent years, she adds. “Private label was once considered an inferior quality product – ‘you get what you pay for’ mentality – however consumers have now switched on to the fact that private label is much closer to branded products than they once thought and is often imperceptible in quality terms.”
In the feminine care market, TSL is seeing increased demand from consumers to do something about period poverty and plastic reduction. In fact, the company recently launched Padlocks with Leeds City Council; supplying free of charge sanitary protection across schools, colleges and public hubs throughout the borough. TSL is also launching its own sustainable feminine care brand that promises best-in-class environmental credentials and exceptional performance at outstanding value. “Sustainability is right up there in terms of public consciousness and we are proud to have our customers telling us we are leading the charge in this respect, in terms of plastic reduction, innovative materials and sustainable processes,” Broadbent says. It’s no surprise then that just last month TSL was awarded ‘Most Sustainable Healthcare Solutions Manufacturer—UK’ in the Corporate Vision Small Business Awards.
TSL is also supporting the U.K. region amid the Covid-19 pandemic. In June the company announced it would return face mask manufacturing to the U.K., with an initial capacity of over 100 million per year to support retail, industry, caregivers, essential workers and the general public. TSL’s state-of-the-art machinery delivers various types of face masks including surgical grade for institutions such as the NHS, as well as general use and fit for purpose grades which are more suitable for the general public, to be sold in retail outlets.
Because masks are being made domestically by TSL, the company can offer significantly faster lead times, the most competitive prices and increased flexibility and agility. “Beyond that, this is a great opportunity following Brexit and the recent confirmation that we are now in recession, whilst in the midst of a global healthcare crisis to support the NHS / key workers and the general public by investing in U.K. manufacturing. Creating local jobs and doing our bit to build a stronger U.K. economy.
