    P. Glatzeder GmbH was founded in 1972 by Peter and Ruth Glatzeder as a supplier to the upholstery furniture industry. Later, due to its close cooperation with Freudenberg, Glatzeder was able to expand its range of services to the converting and distribution of nonwovens and several other technical textiles to customers in Germany and Europe.

The company expanded its capabilities, when in 1990, Peter Glatzeder, together with Freudenberg, founded Convert Vliesveredelung GmbH & Co. KG as a converter for agricultural nonwovens in Waldfischbach-Burgalben. A few years later, NOW Contec GmbH & Co. KG was established at the same location. Today, NOW Contec is one of the world’s leading converters of nonwovens for roofing. In 2016, shares of both companies were sold to Mehler AG in order to be able to perceive further growth opportunities.

Glatzeder is now mainly a converter and a wholesaler of nonwovens and technical textiles, and its customers include nonwovens manufacturers. Glatzeder undertakes various converting tasks for small customers who cannot buy from manufacturers due to low requirements, and also works with large customers who appreciate special services, including warehousing of raw and finished goods, handling of all logistics processes and just-in-time delivery, among others. Glatzeder’s customers can be found in the automotive, packaging, gardening, upholstery, hygiene and medical sectors.

According to Kristin Glatzeder, managing director, P. Glatzeder, the company now covers almost all converting tasks for nonwovens and technical textiles, including rewinding, cutting and flexographic printing as well as the creation of blanks, bags and covers of all shapes and sizes at its facilities in Detmold, Germany. Additionally, with an offline hot and cold calender from Andritz with a working width of 350 cm, Glatzeder can offer surface treatment processes of nonwovens.

In 2016, Glatzeder developed its own brand nu:ju for end consumers in Europe. Through this venture, the company manufactures products for the cosmetics, leisure and sports industries using Evolon. Glatzeder’s relationship with Freudenberg grew even more last year, when it took over the general distribution and converting for small quantities—everything below a mother roll—of Evolon printing media in Germany and central Europe.

In addition to Evolon, both Glatzeder and NOW Contec can convert any material that is supplied on rolls up to a working width of 350cm. These materials include polypropylene spunbond, polyester spunbond, spunlace, needlefelt, membranes, bicomponent nonwovens and chemical bonded nonwovens.

Over its four decades in the nonwovens industry, Glatzeder has continued to invest in its capabilities. Last year, the company boosted production capacity of its NOW Contec subsidiary with the purchase of an additional short-roll winder with a two-color flexographic printing unit and an in-line fully automated packing system for short rolls up to a width of 150cm. And this year, Glatzeder’s machinery park in Detmold will expand with the addition of a short-roll winder with a working width of 210cm. The company is also planning to integrate a new flexographic printing unit with a width of approximately 220cm into an existing machine.

“I see a great movement in the nonwovens market,”  Glatzeder says. “The worldwide competition among the manufacturers and among the converters is increasing. As a mid-sized company, we especially have to find ways to assert ourselves. For us, this means we have to react to more specific customer requests, which often challenges us. But we do not stand still, and we continuously invest in our machines, our employees and our competencies.”
