Sales at Suominen have increased 2.2% from €111.7 million ($153 million) to €114.2 million ($157 million) during the first quarter, the company has announced. Profit increased 4.2% to €7 million ($9.6 million). Highlights of the quarter included the completion of the acquisition of a Brazilian nonwovens operation from Ahlstrom, which will give the company a strong foothold in the region.
Net sales within the Nonwovens segment was close to the level of the comparison period, at €98.4 million ($135 million) The segment’s operating profit, excluding non-recurring items, grew 35% to €6.0 million ($8.2 million), corresponding to 6.1% of net sales.
Also in the first quarter, the company continued to expand production capacity for flushable nonwovens in Windsor Locks, CT, which will be in operation by late May, and begun expanding a similar operation in Europe. Additionally, Suominen has introduced a new nonwoven product for hotel and restaurant industry customers.
