Cotton Incorporated continues to educate and inform consumers on the issue of marine litter. With 9.5 million tons of plastics released into the oceans every year (according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature), it is estimated there will be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans by 2050.
Cotton Incorporated and the Cotton Research and Development Corporation partnered with NC State to conduct a two-year study testing the degradation rates of four fiber types—cotton, rayon, polyester and a cotton/polyester blend. It found that cellulosic fibers decrade significantly more than petroleum-based microfibers leaving few microfibers behind. Cotton also degrades more quickly than artificial cellulosic fibers like rayon.
