Japan's Unicharm is adding a third factory in India to boost production capacity for disposable diapers by 30% there. The new factory, a reported $131 million investment, will begin operating this month in western India's Gujarat state. The site was home to a plant that opened in 2018 and burned down in June 2020. The new factory is expected to create about 1000 jobs.
According to a report on Nikkei.net, the new site will manufacture Unicharm's main MamyPoko disposable diapers for children, as well as adult diapers and sanitary products. Unicharm's other Indian sites are located in Rajasthan in the north and Andhra Pradesh in the south.
Unicharm, which entered the Indian market in 2008, has been the leader in the baby diaper market since 2022 after overtaking Procter & Gamble's Pampers.
Unicharm's success was reportedly the result of offering a premium pants-style diaper and promoting the health benefits of using disposable diapers.
