U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated plans to impose a 10% tariff on Chinese imports into the U.S. beginning next month as well as a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico.
Speaking at the White House, Trump said that the tariffs were in response to China’s role in America’s fentanyl crisis. The president claims China is sending fentanyl to the U.S. via Canada and Mexico.
These tariffs would come on top of levies Trump imposed on more than $300 billion worth of Chinese imports during his first term. Those tariffs were kept in place by by the Biden administration who added levies on Chinese electric vehicles, solar cells, semiconductors and advanced batteries.
Earlier this month, China announced it would not change levies for absorbent products this year, pledging to keep baby and adult diapers tariff-free while keeping levies for feminine care items at 2%.
