GDM began its activity in Suzhou, China, in 2010 by leveraging on the local presence of Coesia Group whcih has been there since 2005. The factory is located in Suzhou Industrial Park, around 100 km northeast of Shanghai. The local capabilities include machines sales and construction, technical support, spare parts and internal realization and assembly of mechanical components.
The investment in a new production facility is strategically important to GDM and Coesia in order to confirm its global reach in all the different regions where offering specifically designed and customized solutions is essential to align with different markets needs. More specifically, sound investments and further engineering efforts have been put in place to re-shape the focus of challenges in developing and emerging markets so as to create a perfect alignment between the comapny's product portfolio and our Customer requirements.
The GDM Suzhou plant is about 13,500 square meters and employs more than 100 resources (in vertical expansion from 2010), including approximately 50 technicians split between engineers and assembly/testing personnel. A part of those are Italian process specialists, now expatriates living in China on a stable basis, in addition to a group of high qualified colleagues with a semi-continuous presence (whose role is mainly business line coordination on a global perspective). The plant also boasts the most modern technological company management planning systems and networking/videoconferencing systems to allow real time connection with company resources and with other Coesia companies (60 operating units in 27 countries with over 4700 employees) and with our clients all over the world.
During the first working year in 2010, GDM manufactured and supplied its clients in China and Asia with upgrade kits, spare parts and top level technical assistance and developed an even more reliable sourcing and supply network by selecting, qualifying and certifying top tier local sub-suppliers.
During 2011, the ambitious BT Star project (baby diaper machine) was launched and immediately turned into a success by collecting orders from Chinese as well as Regional Customers, leading to the opportunity of organizing an Open House event (July 2012) to let even more Customer see “first-hand” GDM technology and realize how much this solution is standing out from market average. This differentiation, reflected by BT Star’ design as a user-friendly, fully integrated platform, is also made possible by the fundamental contribution of our technological partners Optima and Flexlink, which will directly participate aswell to the event.
The Star platform for baby diapers and adult care products, has been studied in order to deliver an excellent costs effectiveness to customers and to transform their business into a success, growing hand-in-hand with GDM as it has been for a number of our current and loyal Customers. BT Star combines the advantages of a significant reduction in finished goods costs (advanced process control) with a flexible configuration, able to adapt to different product design.
BT Star focuses on the very competitive Developing Markets arena, perfect for new Investors as well as for mature Customers willing to expand their reach outside traditional borders and/or planning a global expansion.
“At GDM, we are proud to observe how market demand is exceeding our expectations, thus recognizing our efforts to add customer value into every solution or service we design and improve on a day-to-day basis” explains Giacomo Rinaldi, sales and marketing manager for GDM.
As a result of understanding specific market needs and adapting the portfolio to ever changing market conditions, GDM presence in China will be even more enlarged in the short term, to match capacity with the growing demand of high end technology.
