Commission finisher TSG Finishing LLC has developed a new process to apply C6-based fluorochemicals to nonwoven medical fabrics used in disposable gowns, drapes and instrument wraps. This technique responds to a growing interest in providing more environmentally friendly repellent and anti-static finishes for medical nonwovens. The move away from C8 to C6-based fluorochemicals has resulted in lower performance at higher chemical costs, which has prompted TSG to develop a new method for the application of C6-based fluorochemical treatments for SMMS and hydroentangled nonwovens.
Jeffrey Goldman, technical director and principal for TSF, discusses what he says makes the process a great fit for the industry.He says, "Our unique application technique is completely different from traditional technology used in the industry to treat nonwovens. Oddly enough, the new technology was developed in our Pennsylvania plant on equipment used for other textile products and has a number of important advantages over traditional application methods."
These advantages include hydrostatic head, alcohol repellency, static decay and spray impact performance, Goldman adds. These advantages are achieved while minimally affecting the nonwovens' physical attributes such as trapezoidal tear and grab tensile strength.
