Polypropylene Fiber For Reinforcement Of Matrix Materials

Patented is a composite material comprising a matrix material and a plurality of discrete polymeric fibers defining a length of less than about five inches dispersed throughout the matrix material. The polymeric component of the fibers is selected from the group consisting of polypropylene homopolymers, polypropylene copolymers and mixtures thereof. The fibers describe an elastic modulus greater than about 10 GPa and an elongation of less than about 10%. The composite material exhibits an average residual strength greater than about 1.5 MPa at a fiber load value of less than about 14 pounds of fibers per cubic yard of matrix material.
