Sales hit record highs in the first half of 2023 at Unicharm, increasing 7.7% to ¥453.9 billion ($3.1 billion).
In Japan, sales increased 4.2% thanks to strong performance in the pet care and baby care businesses as well as strength in wellness care, excluding masks. Overseas sales increased driven largely by strength in India, which offset a shrinking market in Thailand and Vietnam. Other strong regions included North America and the Middle East.
Within the baby care business, Unicharm continues to focus on expanding its sales in India, where penetration is low even compared to other emerging countries. These efforts led to record sales in the country. Meanwhile, in Thailand, Unicharm deployed a two-brand strategy to maintain strong marketshare, and, in China, the company adjusted its inventory for premium products while accelerating a shift to the moony brand, a proprietary product made specifically for the local population.
