Ahlstrom announced today that it is consulting with employees to examine future options including the possible closure of its spunlace composite production line number 23 in Chirnside, U.K. Such a decision would impact 11 employees, at a maximum.
The production line is currently underutilized and the level of activity is not enough to support the economic viability of the line, according to the company. It produces nonwovens used in medical and wipes applications as well as for the automotive industry. In the case of closure, activity from this line would be relocated to other Ahlstrom lines.
The Chirnside plant employs about 225 people and is part of Ahlstrom's Food and Medical Business Area.
