Composites based on Ticona’s Fortron PPS are used wherever reinforcement is needed to cuts costs and weight without sacrificing strength and stability. The excellent mechanical and chemical properties of composites make them attractive to other markets as well. They can develop their full potential in sectors like automotive engineering, wind turbine manufacture and pipeline construction.
The fast-growing importance of composites can be shown by a brief comparison. In 1982, the Airbus A 310 consisted of 8% composite modules, while 20 years later the use of composites in the Airbus A 380 has risen to 25%. “In the next generation of aircraft, the content of composites will reach 40%,” affirmed Peter Radden, technical marketing manager at Ticona. In particular, Fortron optimally meets the increasingly pressing need to “replace metal and save money.” Fiber-reinforced composites can cut the weight of components by up to 50% compared with metal or light alloy parts, while still meeting all the engineering criteria for aircraft manufacture. The key features of Fortron PPS are very good resistance to temperatures up to 240°C and to oils, fuels, solvents and anti-icing agents. In addition, the material has excellent hardness, stiffness and dimensional stability. This inherently flame-retardant thermoplastic satisfies all the legal fire resistance standards of the aircraft industry.
