Ciba Sells Masterbatch

October 5, 2006

Ciba Specialty Chemicals will sell its Masterbatch business to Clariant for an undisclosed price. The divestment, which will close during the fourth quarter, will affect 300 employees, who will transfer to Clariant, based in Basel, Switzerland. The Masterbatch business, with sales of CHF80 million, has operations in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and France.

Ciba is selling the Masterbatch business as part of an effort to strengthen its focus on core businesses: plastic additives, coating effects and water and paper treatment.  Within the plastics market, Ciba will continue to leverage core competencies in the research, development, manufacturing and distribution of high performance additives and pigments.
