Two of the European Union's largest trash companies have purchased a minority stake in Knowaste BV, a diaper recycler. SITA and van Gansewinkel now own a combined 15% of the Netherlands-based company, a subsidiary of Toronto-based Knowaste LLC. Knowaste BV's recycling technologies are used to recycle absorbent hygiene products, including disposable baby diapers, incontinence products and disposable bedliners. The end product is sanitized reusable paper pulp and plastic components, the company said. More than 1200 health care institutions, 750 day care facilities and more than 100 municipalities in the Netherlands have their diaper and incontinence waste handled by Knowaste.
