Institute offers testing for water filtration and other capabilities

The Nonwovens Institute at North Carolina State University highlighted its filtration testing services during Filtration 2018.

For water filtration, its swimming pool/spa filter tester is a custom-designed instrument used for evaluation swimming pool/spa filter media based on NSF 50 standard, in which Sil-co-Sil 106 is used for challenging particulate matter. Effective sample diameter is 7cm and a typical face velocity is 0.068 cm/s which are equivalent to 1 gal/min/ft2. This tester measures turbidity and pressure drop at each turn-over and then a turn-over reduction (TR) ratio is calculated as a result.

Meanwhile, its Dead-End liquid filter tester is a custom-designed instrument in which monodisperse particles with a diameter range of 1-20 μm are used as a challenging material for evaluating filter efficiency and applied pressure is controlled to measure water permeability of sample.

Additional capabilities from the Institute include a Beckman Coulter Multisizer 4, which is a benchtop analyzer capable of measuring size distribution, volume and surface area for particle sizes ranging from 0.4 μm to 1600 μm. And, its Espec BTL-344 Environmental Chamber can achieve temperature ranges of -20C to 180C while maintaining a humidity in the range of 10-95%.
