VA Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission gives $500K to Floyd, VA facility for Phase II research on next-gen filter media

Hollingsworth & Vose (Booth 102) has received a $500,000 follow-on R&D grant from Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission for its Floyd, VA facility. The H&V proposal was ranked the highest among the seven grants submitted and passed through the committee without question.

Phase I of the grant was received in 2011 when the Virginia Tobacco Commission awarded H&V’s Floyd facility $750,000 to work on next-generation filtration media. The grant also helped bring additional jobs to the Floyd facility. During Phase 1, Floyd scientists pursued research to evaluate new technology platforms by creating laboratory prototypes and testing ideas and technologies internally. Phase II funding will focus on moving specific areas and products from prototype to commercialization.

Vince Hatcher, site manager, comments, “H&V has been operating in Floyd for over 40 years. We are fortunate to have a lot of talented people and excellent support from Floyd County and the State of Virginia. This grant will help us commercialize advanced filtration media products and continue to grow in key markets.”

The Virginia Tobacco Revitalization Commission was created in 1999 by the VA General Assembly to disperse the settlement from the lawsuit brought against the tobacco companies by many states attorney generals. The funds from the lawsuit are intended to accomplish the economic revitalization and diversification of Virginia’s tobacco-growing region through seven grant programs.
