A disposable absorbent article comprising: a topsheet; a backsheet; an absorbent core disposed between the topsheet and the backsheet comprising a layer of absorbent gelling material and a substrate layer; a carded staple fiber nonwoven having a basis weight of between about 50 grams per square meter (gsm) and about 100 gsm disposed between the absorbent core and the topsheet, wherein the carded staple fiber nonwoven comprises a blend of absorbing fibers, stiffening fibers and filler fibers, wherein the absorbing fibers form about 10% to about 50%, by weight, of the carded staple fiber nonwoven, wherein the absorbent gelling material is disposed more proximal to the carded staple fiber nonwoven than the substrate layer, wherein the carded staple fiber nonwoven has a pore volume radius mode of between about 60 μm and about 120 μm, wherein the carded stapled fiber nonwoven has an air permeability of between about 100 and about 500 m3/m2/min, and wherein the carded staple fiber nonwoven does not comprise latex binder and does not comprise bi-component fibers.
