A method of manufacturing a tampon, the method comprising the steps of: at least partially overlaying a web of base material with a web of absorbent material; securing the web of absorbent material to the web of base material with a first securement forming a bonded end of the web of absorbent material and a free end of the web of absorbent material opposite the bonded end; pivoting the free end of the web of the web of absorbent material about the first securement and away from the web of base material; and cutting the free end of the web of absorbent material while the web of absorbent material is pivoted away from the web of base material to form a plurality of spaced-apart slits in the web of absorbent material.
