An absorbent sanitary article for absorbing body fluids which comprises a fibrous matrix has been patented. The matrix includes at least one fiber having an outer surface and metallic silver attached to the outer surface, the silver having a metallic silver surface area, attachment of the silver to the outer surface consisting essentially of chemical and/or physical bonds other than bonds formed by liquid matrix or dispersing media for the silver, whereby the silver is immobilized relative to the fiber surface so that the metallic silver surface area is accessible to the body fluids and the silver cannot be flushed away from the fiber during use of the sanitary article.
