The aviation industry has recognized the health and safety hazards associated with exposure to oil fumes that can contaminate the ventilation air on aircraft since the 1950s, but has done little to prevent exposure. Further, aviation regulations intended to address exposure to contaminated bleed air on aircraft are vague and not enforced. More recently, though, there has been a growing interest in filtration options for the bleed air supply on aircraft. The author will describe how oil fumes can contaminate the aircraft air supply system, the chemicals of concern, the basic requirements of bleed air filtration, and some of the technical and regulatory challenges.
