Reports coming out of the Brazilian media claim that Belgian hygiene giant Ontex has made a bid for Brazilian pharmaceutical company Hypermarcas' diaper division. Ontex has already proven its interest in the Americas. It acquired Mexico's Grupo Mabe last year.
Brazilan paper O Globo reported earlier this week that Belgium-based Ontex has offered €325 million for the diaper maker whose brands include Sapeka, Pom Pom and Hydrogen. The comany's diaper sales are about €400 million per year.
In announcing the company's first quarter results, Ontex executives called Mabe "an exciting new growth platform..providing further diversification of Ontex." The acquisition also led to the creation of Ontex's Americas retail division, effective March 1, which comprises about 38% of the group's sales.
Ontex has anounced a strategy of becoming one of the five largest suppliers of hygiene products in the world within the next five years and will achieve this through organic sales growth and acquisitions. Ontex went public in 2014.
