A sanitary napkin comprising: an apertured film body-facing cover layer having an open area between about 20% and about 30%, said apertured film body-facing cover layer comprising a first planar surface in a first imaginary plane, a second planar surface in a second imaginary plane located below said first imaginary plane, a first plurality of apertures, at least one member spanning each one of said first plurality of apertures to thereby define a plurality of smaller apertures, each of said plurality of smaller apertures in communication with a respective one of said first plurality of apertures, wherein said member spanning each one of said apertures has a top surface located in a third imaginary plane, said third imaginary plane being located below said first imaginary plane; an absorbent system adjacent said cover layer for receiving liquid therefrom, said absorbent system comprising a first absorbent layer having a basis weight from about 80 gsm to about 110 gsm and a second absorbent layer having a basis weight from about 150 gsm to about 350 gsm which has been air-laid as a bottom layer of pulp, a middle layer of pulp intermixed with superabsorbent polymer, and a top layer containing at least some pulp; wherein said napkin has an average masking value of less than about 85,000, an average fluid penetration time of less than about 35 seconds and an average rewet of less than about 0.05 grams according to the test procedure described herein.
