Superabsorbent polymer and acrylic acid supplier Nippon Shokubai’s Himeji, Japan experienced an explosion over the weekend, which could lead to a shortage in the global baby diaper market. Nippon Shokubai reportedly makes 20% of the world’s SAP supply and 10% of its supply of acrylic acid, a SAP ingredient. The impacted site made 460,000 tons of acrylic acid annually for clients such as Procter & Gamble and the company had been ramping up production there prior to the accident.
