A pharmaceutical packager recently benefited from Martin Automatic’s machinery. The company wanted to increase throughput on an existing filling line by running non-stop. It was not a high speed line—less than 50 fpm—but the manual roll changes were frequent, and the downtime and waste were quite high. This application required two splicers, both performing the same function but feeding from opposite directions and with slightly different configurations. The units needed to splice accurately to a registration mark on the pre-printed packaging laminate web. The splicers were designed to bolt onto the equipment, in place of existing unwinds, and within a very tight space. Finally, the splicers had to meet FDA requirements for the pharmaceutical environment. The units were unique versions of the MBEC butt splicer. Each featured Martin’s patented rolling shear butt splice unit, inertia compensated dancer and proprietary in-register splicing technology.
