Hollingsworth & Vose has unveiled new technology, the Nanoweb, to aid in the filtration of hazardous emissions (i.e. from automobiles). Since filtration capabilities are based on the fineness of fibers, Hollingsworth & Vose makes use of the electrospinning process, which produces nanofibers finer than human hair. This poses a problem for conventional filters since fine fibers create increased drops in pressure and decreased pore size, which minimize efficiency. In contrast, the fineness of the Nanoweb, which is determined by the nanofiber web rather than by the pore size, allows for larger pores. The Nanoweb consequently increases the capacity for particle capture while minimizing the total pressure drop.
