Patented is a flame retardant carpet comprising a primary backing capable of being tufted with an upper surface for receiving a carpet material and a lower surface. The primary backing comprises intumescent material coated on or applied to the upper surface only, incorporated into the primary backing only, or both. Carpet fibers are tufted on the upper surface of the primary backing. A backcoating is associated with the lower surface of the primary backing.
