The fiducial markings include an array of symbols, with at least a portion of peripheral edges of the symbols being spaced apart from peripheral edges of adjacent symbols. A pitch of the array defines a gross measurement scale. The fiducial markings are substantially free of grid lines. The symbols include a circle with a diameter corresponding to the gross measurement scale and a polygon within the circle. The polygon is concentric with the circle and has a height equal to one third the diameter of the circle.
