A disposable absorbent article with a longitudinal axis comprising a front, back and connecting crotch portion has been patented. The crotch portion has a first and a second side edge. Each of the first and second side edges has an end point adjacent to the back portion. The end points are located with a line drawn parallel to the longitudinal axis, at a maximum distance transversely from the longitudinal axis and passing through the first and second side edges twice. The back portion is divided into a first and a second section and the first section is bounded by a first end, a line drawn parallel to the first end and a first and second side edge. The first section is extendable in a traverse direction and a second section is bounded by a line drawn parallel to the first and second end and edge and defines a first area, A1. A line drawn parallel to the first end intersects a pair of corners where the first and second side edges of the first section intersect with the first and second edges of the second section. The second end is parallel to the first end and intersects the end points where the first and second side edges of the crotch portion intersect with the first and second edges of the second section. The first section has a length, L2, measured perpendicularly from the first end to the line drawn parallel. The length L2 is equal to or greater than approximately two inches and the second section has a length, L3, measured perpendicularly from the line drawn parallel to the first line. The length L3 is equal to or greater than approximately one inch. The second section has a second area, A2, defined by a line drawn parallel to the first and second end and by a first and second line. The first and second lines are drawn perpendicular to the second end at the end points. The first and second lines intersect with the line drawn parallel to the first end and the back portion has a ratio, A1/A2. First and second fasteners are secured to the back portion and an absorbent is secured to one of the front, back or crotch portions. Each of the first and second fasteners is releasably attached to the front portion to form a pant-like article with a waist opening and a pair of leg openings.
