A patent has been issued for an absorbent article which comprises a liquid-permeable topsheet, a liquid-impermeable antileakage sheet and a liquid-retentive absorbent core. The absorbent article contains upstanding guards along its longitudinal side portions, which contain one upstanding guard elastic members which form a gather in a widthwise direction of each upstanding guard. Each upstanding guard is sectioned in the widthwise direction into a free end region, a central region and a basal end region. Stress in the free end region is larger than that of the other regions, and the central region has a smaller stress than that of the free end region and the basal region, and the stress of the free end region is from 10 cN to 100 cN.
