UTNRL has added nanofiber melt blowing capabilities to its six inch melt blowing line. Nanofiber meltblown webs were first produced in August 2009 using a spinneret incorporating technology developed by Nonwovens Technology Incorporated and manufactured by the Arthur G. Russell Company. UTNRL faculty and staff produced nonwoven webs of PP, PET and PBT with average fiber diameters less than a half micron.
Research is ongoing to optimize the die design as well as process conditions to achieve even smaller fibers and tighter diameter distribution from a variety of resins.
More details will be provided by UTNRL Director Dr. Gajanan Bhat in the filtration session at the INTC Conference September 24.
