Japanese consumer goods maker Unicharm introduced a mop-type floor cleaner in February 2008, marking its first entry into this market. The wipe is made with exchangeable nonwoven sheets that are placed at the tip of the mop. According to reports, Kao introduced the first floor cleaning wipes in Japan in 1994 and remains the leader of this market which is now valued at ¥17 billion.
Unicharm hopes to leverage its experience in the handy wiper category, where it holds a 47% share and competes heavily with Kao, according to Nonwovens Industry Far East correspondent Kin Ohmura.
